Description

Abstract:

Molino Casarotto is one of a series of Neolithic sites in the Berici Hills in northern Italy which was occupied during the 5th millennium bc and where evidence for farming is restricted. The site dates back to the earliest phase of the local Middle Neolithic, Square Mouthed Pottery culture (VBQ – Bocca Quadrata), and has many original features relating to settlement structures (varied hearth types and timber floors), fragmentation of pottery and lithics – in addition to a rich faunal assemblage.

Here the importance of the red deer dominated fauna recovered at Molino Casarotto is examined within the context of other sites recorded in sub-alpine Italy, looking at data from a series of broadly contemporary sites.

Analysis of faunal material from the site indicates that Molino Casarotto can be represented as a special purpose locale which may have been occupied seasonally (summer?) and used by farmers on a short-term basis only, when there was reason to look for alternative non-domestic produce. Alternatively, if the site assemblage is representative of collections from the wider region then we may be seeing evidence of a degree of systematic continuation of the hunting practices which we more commonly associate with the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic in Western Europe.
