Description

Abstract:

Animals exploited by the hunter-gatherer societies do not only constitute an important food resource but also, their bones are used in the manufacture of instruments. This paper aims to discuss the exploitation of bone raw materials in the Laguna El Doce site, located in the Pampa lagoon area of Santa Fe (NW sector from the Pampean Region; Argentina; 33° 54’ 20’’ S y 62° 08’ 43’’ W) and dated in the Late Holocene.

For this purpose, the archaeofauna and bone technology collections were analyzed and compared. For the second we identify the bone used as support (anatomical units and taxa) and also take into account cutmarks and macroscopic polish in order to differentiate those marks caused by human slaughtering and tear from those resulting from use and manufactures. The artifacts were classified into morphological groups according to their taxonomic categories (considering order and species level) and the shape of its active end.

Bone tools assemblages is composed exclusively of artiodactyla and Lama guanicoe (guanaco) diaphisis. Precisely, those taxa conformed the subsistence base for the societies under study. Therefore, this paper focuses on archaeofaunistical and technological element representations, along on the relationship among them. Finally, this paper provides a global understanding of the site´s faunistical exploitation and particularly, the Lama guanicoe.
