Description

Butchering evidences found in skeletons of the rodent Lagostomus maximus (pains vizcacha) coming from archaeological sites of the end of late Holocene (1000 to 600 b.P.) of the Western Edge of Tandilia Range (Buenos Aires Province, Argentina) are described. The record of bony diversity, the quantity of specimens, the cut marks, those of scrape and the intentional fractures indicate that the plains vizcachas was entered whole to the sites and that were processed with skinning, disarticulation, filleting and breaking bone for marrow o skin. The comparison with the exploitation of the vizcacha during former millennia of the same hills shows that this species acquired higher numeric importance and the butchery processes was more elaborated only toward the end of the late Holocene. This phenomenon is linked to the development of diversification and intensification of areal economies in the Pampean Region in which the small game was preponderant in Tandilia Range.
