Description

Abstract:

Since 1990, large-scale, interdisciplinary excavations are carried out at Sagalassos, an ancient town at 7 km to the north of Ağlasun in the province of Burdur, and at 110 km to the north of Antalya, in the western Taurus Mountains. The town was built at an altitude of between 1490 and 1600 metres above sea level. Previous faunal analyses and publications focussed on all major animal groups, i.e. the traditional vertebrates (domestic and wild mammals and birds, herpetofauna and fish), but thus far molluscs have never been studied in detail. Terrestrial gastropods have been most frequently collected during the excavations. Marine shells and Anatolian freshwater species occur as well, and their identification was rather straightforward. The small land gastropods that initially posed a major problem because of the lack of adequate literature and the problematic systematic position of many modern taxa have been revised now. The presence of the encountered taxa will be explained from a taphonomical point of view, whereby a distinction will be made between (pene-) contemporaneous intrusives, late intrusives, possible geological intrusives, and molluscs that may be anthropic in origin. The data will then also be interpreted from a palaeo-environmental and palaeo-economic (use as food or as raw material) point of view.
