Description

Abstract:

The season of birth and reproductive performance of the wild boars in Gunma Prefecture, Japan was evaluated in this study. Samples of ovaries, uteri, skull and mandibles of female were collected. Of 227 females analyzed, 27.2% were visibly pregnant, and male to female ratio of fetus was 85 to 79 and 34 were unable to identify the sex due to their size. The average litter size was 4.8. Most animals were expected to born in the months of March through September based on the fetus size. The results suggest that the season of birth is variable and exogenous factors such as abundance of available food resources may have a strong impact on the reproductive conditions.
