Description

Abstract:

This contribution presents a taphonomic study carried out on macromammals remains recovered from Uluzzian layer EIII 5 of Cavallo cave (Apulia – Southern Italy). Uluzzian is a distinctive culture that characterizes Middle-Upper Palaeoltihic transition in Italy. Aim of this study is to obtain informations about exploitation of animal resources implemented by man during this period. Comparison beetween analyzed sample and musterian assemblagges coming from sites of the same region shows significant differences in skeletal part frequencies. On the contrary similarities are detectable with data from Gravettian and Epigravettian samples recovered in other Apulian sites. These results suggest probable changes in management of the carcasses by the prehistoric hunters who were living in this region.
