We had a busy spring here at the Data Literacy Program (DLP). Between publishing more articles, here on The Alexandria Archive’s News, and getting two data stories published for public use, we’ve done a lot in this second quarter of 2022. But beyond what we write about, what have we done recently?
For the second quarter of 2022, there were a number of things we wanted to achieve and we were able to do most of them. The major one, of course, was getting Cow-culating Your Data in Spreadsheets and R and Gabbing About Gabii: Going from Notes to Data to Narrative posted for everyone to use. We also wanted to make sure that we kept moving with other data stories so that once we published those two, we could get the next stories out ASAP.
We want to get these stories out quickly, improving production speed, because we want to make resources people use. To see that, we needed to have data stories examples out there for folks to test, try, and apply helping us decide what to make more of!
One way we’re improving production speed is by changing how we test our next data stories. The next few are gin our Aggregative and our Creative series. It makes sense to change how we test these because they have more variable learning outcomes. This is because they’re primarily lists that we hope participants use on their own to practice data literacy at their own pace.
So, how did we change our testing?
While we’ll be sending out another survey, we’re targeting a new audience! Rather than focus on folks within archaeology, we want anyone, and we mean anyone, who has been in a book club or led one to participate. We can’t run a book club ourselves right now, but we can see what folks’ book club experiences have been like and use those to inform the structure of our resources. So if you’re an avid book club fan, look out for our survey soon!

One of our other goals this quarter was to draft more data stories. And we have! We’ve got a number of data stories in development and one place you can see them will be in our Table of Contents.
This handy document is for collaborators (of any affiliation) to see what the DLP has in store. We’re excited to share this with you soon as a menu for what we’ve got in store.
In summary, we are very excited to have our first two data stories published and we’re looking forward to having our next collection of stories ready. In addition, we’ll be delivering data stories diffferently in the second half of this year, and we hope that y’all will enjoy them just as much as we do.
