Weapons Of Math Destruction, an AAI Reads video

June 8, 2023 by Paulina Przystupa

Do you love reading? Do you love book clubs or recommendation lists? Do you have an interest in archaeology? If you said “yes” to at least one of these questions, we’d love for you to check out our book blurb videos, which are part of our upcoming data story, Of Mycenaean Men: Public Archaeology Book Club.

The book we’re highlighting this week is Weapons of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy by Cathy O’Neil. We already highlighted Weapons of Math Destruction as part of the AAI Reads! Series, so you can revisit our TIFF, JPEG, and Thumbnail reviews of the book here.

On the left hand side is a perpendicular banner that reads in white "A Digital Data Story" and below that in smaller light blue lettering "Of Mycenaean Men: Public Archaeology Book Club". Both text are on a dark blue background. The rest of the image is a faded version o a book that looks like a neural network with many connecting lines and nodes; with a rainbow coloring in the lines and a dark blue to black fade in the background that is the AAI Reads Logo. On top of these spattered about are Mycenaean masks that look like a person smirking and swords that look like they're stabbing into the pages of the book. The image associates this Data Story with the previous blog series and signals it's the testing phase through it's more kooky imagery.

We’ll open Of Mycenaean Men for feedback at the end of June!

Weapons of Math Destruction is the second book in our “What Are Data?” theme and we’ll be posting more videos soon, so make sure to check back in throughout June! If you enjoy these videos, check in at the end of this month when we’ll be sharing the drafts for our Of Mycenaean Men: Public Archaeology Book Club Data Story. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy the Data Literacy Program duo chatting about Weapons of Math Destruction. Happy Reading!
