It’s All in the Wrist (Bones): Archaeological Data as Artistic Inspiration

July 20, 2023 by Paulina Przystupa

The heading image for our new Data Story It’s All in the Wrist (Bones): Archaeological Data as Artistic Inspiration. It includes the title in light blue across the top, the words "A Digital Data Story in White on a dark blue background on the left edge". The center area has five sticky notes with a pushpin in them information about the Data Story. The first light blue outlined sticky note on the upper left reads "How to get started using data creatively", next to a it an indigo oune reads "A 31-Day calendar of writing prompts". The one on the farthest right is also in light blue and reads "searching open context for project data". The bottom line has another indigo outlined one that reads "narrative examples from open data" next to a pink outlined one that reads "how to take part in collaborative creativity projects".These sit on a white background and have the Open Context logo (two rhombii on their sides to form a book with one dark blue side--left--and one light blue side--right) Underneath that reads "The Alexandria Archive Institute". These sit together underneath the Data Story heading to it's lower right.

This exercise is best suited to those with an interest in public archaeology, the dynamics of ritual behavior, or the archaeology of central China. Users should have a basic understanding of archaeological data types, but little previous experience with archaeology is required.

This page provides access to the resource in two ways. The first is through a series of PDFs that represent the completed Data Story. These PDFs include:

  1. Creative Prompt Guide
  2. Project Search Tutorial
  3. Teaching Guide

A single PDF for the combined parts is available here. Secondary access to the above listed materials is available through the Digital Data Stories code repository on Codeberg. These markdown files represent the source material for the text and primary images within the PDFs, minus additional formatting, and with only a general placement of images. This code represents our commitment to open science and transparency in our process.

These materials, either through the PDFs or the code, are designed to be used synergistically. However, any piece of this Data Story may be used separately or re-ordered according to the requirements of the individual or for specific educational goals. This Data Story also references Of Mycenaean Men Part Two: The Open Context Keyword Search Tutorial. Furthermore, the markdown files may be altered and forked from the Codeberg repository for custom use with different data sets. These resources are available free to use under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY-SA 2.0) license.

Thank you so much for utilizing our educational resources! If participants have the time, please consider contributing thoughts to our ongoing survey, whose data we will use to periodically update the resource. Such updates will be noted here, and will be first available through the code repository prior to PDF updating.
