The AAI’s Data Literacy Program (DLP) had a busy year! Check out this data set that lists all the Digital Data Stories, invited workshops, videos, and other works that the program developed since its establishment in 2020. In 2025, we shared more educational resources in our Data Story Shorts collection, released an interview Eric Kansa in which we discussed data citation in archaeology, and presented the resources from program at the Society for American Archaeology conference, the World Archaeological Congress, and the Second Conference on Public Archaeology. The year wrapped up with a crowning achievement of the program –the Archaeological Data Literacy Practicum (ADLP) — a pilot program that distills the best of the DLP’s resources into a short course that can be tailored by others to teach data literacy skills into the future.
Postdoctoral researcher Paulina created and taught the ADLP in October of this year, incorporating a mix of synchronous meetings and self-directed lessons over four weeks, to a cohort that included professionals and students from all over the world. In addition to providing a variety of pathways to hone data literacy skills, the program supported participants in creating their own data-driven narratives. The pilot program wrapped up with a virtual “mini-conference” where the participants had the opportunity to present their final projects to an audience of cohort members, colleagues, and community members. The pilot ADLP has provided a chance for us to get feedback on the Digital Data Stories and to record more videos as resources for cultivating a variety of data literacy skills. We plan to run the ADLP again in 2026 and eventually make the program available as a template for others to use to teach data literacy skills in their own setting.
