A book outlined like a constellation or a neural network for the Data Stories Logo. This sits on the left to signify that the article this image is associated with is related to the Data Literacy Program that also uses this image. Next to the book though (rather than the Data Literacy Program name) are the words "Sourcing Series" in white. Below that it states "Image Subscription Services" in light blue. This article will be the another content article in the sourcing series focusing on some examples of good image subscription services for archaeology.

Handy image subscription services for archaeology

Welcome to another Sourcing Series segment presented by the Data Literacy Program (DLP) of the Alexandria Archive Institute. In this article, we introduce a couple of subscription-based sources for (re)usable images. This is a follow-up to our introduction to online sources for reusable images.

There is rainbow-colored image of a neural-network0-like book adapted from an Adobe Stock image that is the logo for the AAI Reads Series at the center of the image. Beneath this book, are the words AAI READS: Nonfiction. Below that is the logo for Open Context (the opening book) and that of the Alexandria Archive Institute listed underneath it.

This is a screen capture of the Table of Contents within the Spring 2025 Reference Guide. It is organized with the major subjects of the guide on the left with their corresponding umber on the far right. Major sections are in black with more specific Data Story or Data Story shorts in blue. It lists two series (Tutorial and Aggregative) and the five data stories in those two series.

We’re happy to announce the Data Literacy Program’s (DLP’s) Spring 2025 Reference Guide. Formerly known as the Table of Contents, this Version 3.0 of that document provides short introductions for all our Digital Data Stories.

This header illustrates the Data Story Tome Reader: The AAI Reads Comcis Book Club. The image consists of "A Digital Data Story" on the side of the image in white on a blue background. There is rainbow-colored image of a neural-network0-like book adapted from an Adobe Stock image that is the logo for the AAI Reads Series at the center of the image. Beneath this book, are the words AAI READS: Comics. Paulina (a person with long hair, an undercut on the visible side, earrings, glasses wearing a sleeveless shirt) sits on the left looking out at the audience looking as if to speak with Meghan (a person with bangs, long hair, glasses, wearing a loose turtle neck) on the left smiling and looking out at the audience as if to speak.

This header illustrates the Data Story "TO DISRUPT AND DELIGHT: TEACHING ARCHAEOLOGY THROUGH NARRATIVE". The image consists of "A Digital Data Story" on the side of the image in white on a blue background. There is a set of adobe or stone walls that are tinged blue that look like the should come together but htere's a larger cut taken out of them. In that empty space sits the title of the Data Story and the logo for Open Context/the Alexandria Archive institute. The missing section of the image was cut out representing a "disruption" to the site caused by a cut through the wall caused looting that then filled with sand.

The text reads “Reading data involves understanding what data is, and what aspects of the world it represents. Working with data involves acquiring, cleaning, and managing it. Analyzing data involves filtering, sorting, aggregating, comparing, and performing other such analytic operations on it. Arguing with data involves using data to support a larger narrative intended to communicate a message to a particular audience. Bhargava, Rahul, et al. “Data murals: Using the arts to build data literacy.” The Journal of Community Informatics 12.3 (2016). Throughout this document, data stories are aligned to show how they can be used to reinforce Reading, Working, Analyzing, Arguing, and communciating with data. These make up the key components of archaeological data literacy for the program and these resource aim to reinforce” Reading is in dark blue matching a circular book spine icon to the left of the text that is in white lines on the blue background; Working is in light blue matching a tabbed planner-style circular icon in white lines on the same light blue; Analyzing is in lavender corresponding to a circular computer icon in white lines on the same lavender; Arguing is in pink corresponding to a circular text books icon in white lines; and Commucicating is in black corressponding to a circular laptop icon with waves going out in white lines

Pubs, no drinks included – Publications that cultivate data literacy

February 17, 2025 by Paulina Przystupa

For this Digital Data Stories (DDS) Series on Series entry, we’re exploring our Publication Series where we use the format of the publication to highlight important aspects of data literacy.
