Act 11: Choose your Story

October 12, 2023 by Paulina Przystupa

A splash of sunshine in some strange new worlds helped the Data Literacy Program (DLP) satisfy our missions for the third quarter of 2023. We’ve been all over the globe, so let’s see where in the world the DLP Duo disembarked.

The image is of a rug, slightly pulled up at the corners. Text around it reads, "Re-Evaluating How to Review...When the Rug is Pulled Out From Under You."

So You Used to Do Data Collection on Twitter?

October 5, 2023 by Meghan Dennis

From the day the DLP Duo started working on creating Data Stories, we set out with a clear intention to make sure the work we released was properly evaluated. We’d seen too many projects and resources created, released, and never tested, especially not for those things that underline the heart of our work – usability, […]

This is an image advertisement/poster for a workshop at the Florida Public Archaeology networks' First Conference on Public Archaeology. Their logo sits in the bottom left on the image. Across the top is the name of the workshop "Interacting with the Past" on line one with "Using Online and In-Person Games to teach archaeology and Heritage". The title is in light blue. Below that is the title for the first game "FAIR FINDS" in dark blue and it points to "Interactive Fiction on Twine" in light blue to the bottom right of it. Then there's a blue tinted image of a swamp. Below that is the title "A Glorious Mystery" the second game. It has an arrow from it pointing up to the words "Live Action Roleplay" in light blue. The bottom Right has the where and when for the workshop. Bowden Building, Classroom 1 and Friday 22 September 2023 1:15 - 3:15 Pm. On the bottom are the Alexandria Archive and Open Context logos on a dark blue banner.

Playtest some Prototypes in Pensacola

September 19, 2023 by Paulina Przystupa

The Data Literacy Program will share two new Data Stories this week at the Florida Public Archaeology Network’s (FPAN’s) Conference on Public Archaeology. And if you’re in Pensacola, you can playtest them both!

The heading image for our new Data Story 30 Days to an Article: Archaeological Inspiration for Your Writing. It includes the title in light blue across the top, the words "A Digital Data Story in White on a dark blue background on the left edge". The center area has five sticky notes with a pushpin in them with information about the Data Story. The first light blue outlined sticky note on the upper left reads "How to get started on your writing", next to a it an indigo one reads "A 31-Day calendar of writing prompts". The one on the farthest right is also in light blue and reads "Using search terms for inspiration from data". The bottom line has another indigo outlined one that reads "narrative examples from open data" next to a pink outlined one that reads "how to share work safely on social media". These sit on a white background and have the Open Context logo (two rhombii on their sides to form a book with one dark blue side--left--and one light blue side--right). Underneath that reads "The Alexandria Archive Institute". These sit together underneath the Data Story heading to it's lower right.

30 Days to an Article: Archaeological Inspiration for Your Writing

This exercise is best suited to those with an interest in public archaeology, writing as practice, or using archaeological data as motivation. Users should have a basic understanding of archaeological data types to understand what platforms to search, but little previous experience with archaeology is required.

The first light blue outlined sticky note on the upper left reads "How to get started using data creatively", next to a it an indigo one reads "A 31-Day calendar of writing prompts". The one on the farthest right is also in light blue and reads "searching open context for project data". The bottom line has another indigo outlined one that reads "narrative examples from open data" next to a pink outlined one that reads "how to take part in collaborative creativity projects". These sit on a white background and have the Open Context logo (two rhombii on their sides to form a door opening with one dark blue side--left--and one light blue side--right) Underneath that reads "The Alexandria Archive Institute". These sit together underneath the Digital Data Story' title.

July 6, 2023 by Paulina Przystupa

The end of the second quarter of 2023 means we’re more than 50% done with the year. Oh… and that it’s a great time to catch y’all up on the work done by the Data Literacy Program (DLP)! With so much going on in the first quarter, we kept up the pace, getting even more […]
